The Project History

Watch a short video on Project: Fruit Stars' mission!

How Project: Fruit Stars Came to Be...

Project: Fruit Stars was created by the combined efforts of Fruits of Sherbrooke (a not-for-profit organization that preserves donated and rescued local fruit) and E4C (a charitable human services organizination with the mandate to alleviate and eventually eliminate poverty). The mission of Project: Fruit Stars was to produce 50,000 dehydrated apple snack bags for the E4C's School Nutrition program.

How did it Originate and Where is it Going?...

Christina and Carol are from the Sherbrooke neighbourhood in Edmonton, Alberta. They were walking their dogs and noticed perfectly fine apples were being thrown away and were inspired to find a way to use them as they felt that food should not be wasted.

*Fruit Stars does not use fruit from the ground in their food products for health and safety reasons! They rescue fruit!

  • In the first year, they made apple pies with local fruit, however, it took up too much freezer space.

  • They focused more on jam and jelly.

  • Later on, they added dehydrated fruits apple sauce tubes.

  • They partnered with E4C for snack programs at schools and also started donating apples to schools.

Fruit Stars' long term goal is getting a big enough production to serve the inner city, hope mission, people on the street, and other community kitchens. Some of Fruits Stars' dreams are to:

  • Set up a commercial kitchen.

  • Create a learning space in the kitchen to teach fruit leather and dehydrated fruit processes.

  • Give kids jobs so that they can make food for themselves.

  • Offer entry level jobs and/or give food handling certificates so that workers can gain experience in the food industry.
