- About Project: Fruit Stars -

What do they do?

The mission of Project: Fruit Stars was to produce 50,000 dehydrated apple snack bags for the E4C (a charitable organization that promotes positive healthy lifestyles for vulnerable individuals) School Nutrition program from rescued local apples.

Where do the fruit come from?

Due to unfortunate weather circumstances, there was a shortage of apples in the Edmonton area this last season. With the assistance of local supporters, Project: Fruit Stars was able to procur apples from a generous B.C. orchard and have the apples shipped to Edmonton. With limited access to cold storage, a place was needed to keep the fruit until they were able to be processed. The Organic Box, a local business that supports the Fruits of Sherbrooke organization (affiliate of Project: Fruit Stars), donated refrigeration space to store the apples until they were able to be shipped over to the Westmount Community Centre to be processed.

Who does this?

As Project: Fruit Stars is not-for-profit, they rely heavily on volunteers to prepare and process the apples. This is where we come in. As students of the University of Alberta, we have the opportunity to participate in Community Service Learning experiences. As a requirement for EDPS 360 Education and Society, we have been able to work with this amazing organization and make a difference in our community.
